Four variables, and only one of them is the rating printed on the filter.

Face area is the variable that matters most and the one nobody discusses. Pressure drop across a filter is a function of how fast air is being forced through the media, so doubling the face area for the same airflow roughly halves the velocity and dramatically reduces the penalty. A four inch deep media cabinet with a large face achieves a high capture rating at a lower pressure drop than a one inch filter of much lower rating in a small slot.
